BankGiro Loterij extends funding of museums

The BankGiro Lottery extended its funding for seven cultural institutions, the four Dutch state museums (the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Mauritshuis and the Kröller-Müller Museum), plus the Rembrandt Association, the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden and TwentseWelle. The organisation pledged to continue structural funding over the coming years for financing acquisitions and making collections accessible.

Cultural lottery
The BankGiro Lottery supports institutions and initiatives associated with culture and the preservation of cultural heritage in the Netherlands. Thanks to its many participants, in 2012 the BankGiro Lottery was able to gift more than 64 million euros to over 60 museums and other cultural institutions in the Netherlands. These gifts financed such items as the purchase of important acqusitions, to supplement collections, or the restoration of pieces already in collections.

The Van Gogh Museum has received financial gifts from the BankGiro Lottery since 1998 and has used these in the acquisition of important paintings, drawings and prints. Examples of these acquisitions are Pollard willow by Vincent van Gogh (2012), Woman on the Champs-Elysées by night by Louis Anquetin (2010), Montmartre in the rain by Pierre Bonnard (2009),  View from a balcony by Gustave Caillebotte (2003), The jetty of Boulogne-sur-Mer by Edouard Manet (2002), Windmils in the Westzijderveld by Zaandam by Claude Monet (2001) and Portrait of Guus Preitinger by Kees van Dongen (1999).
