Van Gogh self-portrait in 10,000 sunflowers and gerberas

The Museumplein was decorated with a gigantic artwork, 80 m2 , which reproduced Van Gogh’s famous self-portrait in a rather surprising way. The 10,000 flowers, from Israel and the Netherlands, represented the pixels in photographic reproductions of the painting. Over thirty people worked almost non-stop for three days to complete the enormous installation.

Longstanding partnership
Shell Nederland initiated the project to celebrate its longstanding partnership with the Van Gogh Museum. For eight years the company and the museum conducted extensive research into Vincent van Gogh’s methods. The results of this research have provided new insights in areas such as how the Van Gogh Museum’s collection can best be preserved. As the Van Gogh Museum’s Partner in Science Shell Nederland was involved in many discoveries associated with the techniques and materials used by Van Gogh in his paintings. The research project was concluded with the exhibition Van Gogh at work (= link naar artikel 5.1 op tijdlijn), where visitors could see and experience how Van Gogh learned his craft, how he worked and how he developed over the course of ten years into a unique artist with an impressive body of work.
